A Leadership Journey – Summary

My priority was doing the best I could, not leadership, and I was a bit wary of those who were keen to be the one in charge. I soon learned I sometimes had to be in charge to achieve the best, and eventually learned that leadership is a journey, and one which has an end – the point where others take over and continue on their journeys. These words are to help others to do so on my three main journeys:

  • The Sporting Years
  • The Working Years
  • The Charity Years

They may also help those who are on – or about to start – their own journeys. In some ways, they may also help me as I embark on new journeys.

Mike McEwan worked in Technology Services at the Royal Bank of Scotland for 18 years before retiring in May 2011. He graduated in 1981 from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc Computer Science.

Running his own company - Mike McEwan Ltd - from June 2011 until January 2021, Mike also served as Director at Purview Services from April-December 2020. In January 2021 he began a new role as Delivery Lead for buildit.

An avid fencer since the age of 16, Mike now regularly competes on the veterans' circuit and is a former Scottish Champion and Veterans' Commonwealth medallist.
